Johannsen big game rifles set new standards

To the present day, the Mauser M 98 bolt system has remained the favourite choice for shooters looking for a hunting rifle offering perfect design and maximum safety. During the first post-war decades, selected military actions were the starting point from which bolt-action rifles for civilian use were developed.  From the 1990s onwards, 98 bolt action rifles have been made with actions from new production.

The basic design of the M 98 is retained, but the design is modified for different civilian uses. For example, the thumbcut  is omitted and the double square bridge is integrated into the action, allowing optimal placing of the sight mount. The original wing safety is replaced by a horizontal 3-flag-safety on the bolt sleeve which will not interfere with the low sight mount while at the same time guaranteeing the highest level of safety.

Johannsen’s 98 bolt actions are all manufactured in Germany and CNC milled from solid material. The basic material is tempered steel that is hardened according to purpose.  The action is machined from high-grade 42CrMo4 alloy steel. Standard features include an adjustable trigger and a traditional box magazine with standard floor plate (pushpiece integrated into the trigger guard). The magazine box/floorplate unit is of course milled from solid material.

Johannsen’s Mauser M 98 bolt actions have all the safety features of the original Mauser system with its more than one hundred years of safe service. This includes a particularly reliable lateral extractor, two locking lugs just behind the bolt head and an additional rear safety lug,  a bayonet lock on the firing pin, the firing pin’s gas deflection device and the gas discharge feature in the bolt design, and the bolt sleeve with its buttress thread and fire shield.

The systems at a glance

Maximum safety, high-end materials, excellent gunsmithing.

Johannsen’s 98 actions come in three traditional lengths: Short, Standard, and Magnum. Additionally, a Mini M 98 action is available for the smaller .222 Remington cartridge dimensions. The versatility of Johannsen Express rifles is due to this wide range of action lengths. Based on one of the four lengths of actions, the rifles can be optimized for any hunting scenario all over the world.

Johannsen Mini

In our Mini-System, the small cartridges can be accommodated in the dimensions of the .222 Remington optimally in an M98-Action too.

Johannsen Short

M 98 Short Actions are among the rarest to be found pre-WWII M 98 models. They were originally developed for use with cartridges such as 8x51 Mauser.

Johannsen Medium

The Johannsen M 98 Medium Action has the dimensions of the traditional standard M 98 action as it was used in millions of military repeating rifles in the past.

Johannsen Magnum

While in the 19th century, double barrel rifles and falling-block rifles were the dominant firearm types used for hunting in India and Africa, the M 98 entered the scene as early as 1898, introducing a repeating rifle design.

Johannsen Falling Block

Falling-Block rifles were among the most important rifle types when metal cartridges (loaded with black powder at first) revolutionized firearm construction in the second half of the 19th century.

Novelity 2020

The benefits of the M 98 action’s ingenious construction are accompanied by the meticulous customizing gunsmithing work done in Reimer Johannsen’s workshop. Each rifle is individually produced, so that every particular customer request regarding barrel contour, optics, stockmaking and engraving can be met by experienced craftsmen. The only thing that cannot be changed is the central element: the legendary M 98 action.

As an alternative to the bolt action rifle and with the same high level of craftsmanship and production quality, Reimer Johannsen also offers a falling-block rifle based on a modified Hagn action. Falling-block rifles are among the oldest constructions since the invention of cartridge rifles and are particularly robust and easy to handle.
